After 3+ years of work in the Switch-On virtual lab, experimenters are actively discussing the benefits that the collaborative work provided. We are motivated to engage in an open discussion on the strength, weaknesses, opportunities and threats (SWOT analysis) related to working together in a virtual and open environment. We welcome comments from visiting scientists and students.

In my opinion, the main strength of the virtual lab is the availability of open information. We are contacted by several colleagues looking for data, software and experiment protocols. The main weakness is certainly given by the virtual character of our discussions. We realized that a virtual interaction takes more time than a physical interaction. Therefore the threat is certainly given by lack of time of researchers, which may induce some of them to miss the opportunities that a virtual lab may offer. In fact, there are several opportunities: the most interesting one, in my opinion, is the capability of compare the results with respect to different context and researchers.

What is your opinion on the virtual lab? Any ideas?

    Thanks for your time!
